Ah Um (2009)

This piece re-categorizes a media literacy lecture by removing all of the words and keeps just the stutters and “ah’s” and “umm’s”. The vocal fragments eventually coalesce into a rhythm and the vocalizations become a percussion backdrop for improvisation. During the middle of the song the vocals are stretched and fragmented in a conversational improvisation with alto saxophonist Rob Brown. Recorded live at the Bronx River Arts Center the band also includes Sabir Mateen (tenor saxophone), Lewis Porter (keyboards), Andrew Drury (drums), Andrew Demirjian (audiovisual processing) and Chad Dell (lighting and camera feeds).

Desire and Intent (2009)

A hand-cranked metronome is motion tracked and triggers video of artists talking about their artistic goals and desires. These videos then respond to the amplitude of the band as they improvise to the voices responding to the phrasing and tone of the dialog. Recorded live at the Bronx River Arts Center with Rob Brown (alto saxophone), Sabir Mateen (tenor saxophone), Lewis Porter (keyboards), Andrew Drury (drums), Andrew Demirjian (audiovisual processing) and Chad Dell (lighting and projections).

Microclimates (2008)

Recorded live at the Stone, New York Oct. 3rd 2008. The left projection is a video feedback loop that is texturing a 3-D mesh object. The video feedback creates movement on screen that is motion tracked and triggers the low bass notes and partials upon passing a threshold. The amplitude of the bass notes then control the shape of the 3D mesh object creating a reciprocal audiovisual interaction. The sounds generated from this become the sonic bed for the musician’s improvisation. The right projection is sampling the MIDI data from the keyboardist’s synthesizer, and then using that input to generate clusters of sine wave clouds that are then granularly panned around the space. The audio output is analyzed to control the movement, size, and shape of clouds of openGL animated meshes. The artists include Roy Campbell Jr. (trumpet), Andrew Demijrian (audio and video processing - left), Whit Dickey (drums), Lewis Porter (keyboard). Zachary Seldess (audio and video processing -right).

Harmonize Most High (2008)

The band Harmonize Most High
recorded live at the Stone, New York, Oct. 3, 2008. The audio and video of the musician's is being sampled, fragmented, processed and added back into the collective improvisation. The tenor sax soloist is Daniel Carter.

Now's the Time (2007)

Now’s the Time is documentation of a live video and audio improvisation at Jazz at Lincoln Center between Lewis Porter playing keyboards and playing live video. Demirjian, who is also a musician, video tapes himself playing saxophone and then uses this footage as raw data to be manipulated live via laptop. The performance extends the sonic and rhythmic range of the instrument by allowing control of the speed, direction, layers of video and a myriad of filters to create new sonic and visual possibilities.
