<image:title>Which Yesterday is Tomorrow? - “Timely and timeless, 'Which Yesterday is Tomorrow?'prompted rethinking of a whole range of issues, from colonialsim and diaspora to trade and refugees.” Sarah Tanguy, Sculpture Magazine</image:title>
<image:caption>Which Yesterday is Tomorrow? questions Western perceptions of time with an immersive environment intended to break down barriers between, past, present and future by reconnecting visitors with the senses, rituals, and mythologies that have been diminished in an age dominated by relentless commerce and time scarcity. This piece began with a substantial amount of research into the sonic, poetic and material culture of Ottoman era coffee shops and Silk Road caravan- serais. The installation conjures a fictive location where aesthetics and ideologies are exchanged freely, establishing an alternative to the historical narrative of colonization, crisis, and territoriality typically associated with the region’s portrayal in American media.</image:caption>

<image:title>Which Yesterday is Tomorrow? - “The same modularity marked Demirjian’s immersive sonic and textual landscape. His spellbinding audios, which improvised on old wind and string instruments, enveloped the gallery through four portable speakers.” Sarah Tanguy, Sculpture Magazine</image:title>
<image:caption>The soundtrack is also intended to evoke an alternative to the linear experience of the temporal in favor of cyclical or slower conceptions of time. All of the sounds start with pure tones from Anatolian folk instruments like the saz, ney, kemençe and were slowed down to extreme lengths using a customized granular synthesis program. This approach creates a sonic environment that feels as if you are resonating along with a saz string or moving at an impossibly slow speed of a ney vibrato. These sounds were then moved around the space, articulating different architectural features of the environment creating a feeling of entering into an alternative experience of time. The installation also questions the design forms for sonic delivery, instead of brown rectangular book-case speakers, each of the four speakers in the installation are a sculptural, ritual object fab- ricated by the artists that could be moved by the visitor.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Echoes of Liberation</image:title>
<image:caption>The audio consists of interviews with BOS members who were active during this period conducted in the fall of 1991 by Gilbert Cohen including Joseph Brown, Vickie Donaldson, Richard Roper, and Vivian Sanks-King. ‘Echoes of Liberation’ is a collaborative project that thematically excerpts these interviews and spatially maps them to sections of the campus to allow visitors to hear the reflections of BOS members about the liberation of Conklin Hall, its planning and aftermath. The sustained actions of BOS members had a significant impact on the process of making Rutgers University Newark one of the most diverse campuses in the United States.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Echoes of Liberation</image:title>
<image:caption>The audio plays automatically based on your location in Norman Samuels Plaza. There are four sections of audio that are thematically grouped and placed in different sites in the plaza. The pathway between Hill Hall and Paul Robeson Campus Center from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. into the plaza is the ‘infinitive verb alley’ consisting of the infinitive verbs that were used by BOS members to describe their actions and process. On the plaza side of Paul Robeson Campus Center (the name change of which was instigated by BOS members) is the ‘audio walk of fame’ section where BOS members recite the names of the members who took part in the liberation of Conklin Hall. The northeast section of Paul Robeson Campus Center with overhanging roof and outdoor seating is the ‘cantilever questions’ section. In this area, questions that BOS members asked themselves and each other are heard. Finally, in the fourth section of the plaza, ‘foundations and forking paths’, the listener hears BOS members discuss the books, authors, activists and philosophers who had an impact on their thinking. The interview excerpts were played into the architecture of the campus with radios and re-recorded so the listener hears the voices of BOS members echoing off the walls where they are standing.</image:caption>

<image:caption>The poetry in the book is created with multiple constraint systems, sets of aesthetic rules applied in an artistic context, to generate the artwork. For instance, some poems are built from querying search terms in the database of over 4,600 lines of anthem lyrics on topics like ‘navigation’, ‘time’, ‘sound’ and combining lyrics from different songs by topic. In other instances, the entire database of words is broken up by word length (one character words, two-character words, three-character words, etc.) and reorganized as snowball poems that grow from one to ten letter word phrases creating lyrics for a new hybrid anthem not centered on any one country.</image:caption>

<image:title>Color Yourself Inspired™ - “While it may be easy to get lost in the pleasant, occasionally discordant colors and sounds, the cheeky trademark symbol in the piece’s title reminds the viewer that each cute color name was produced by a slew of marketing experts at a large company. Though the random color/ sound/name combinations seem whimsical and organic, they still retain a level of artificiality and marketability. Not even colors are safe from capitalism.” Sarah Boudreau and Annie Raab, Editor’s Note for The New River spring 2020</image:title>

<image:caption>The custom designed computer program maps the hue, saturation and brightness of the selected colors to specific areas on the 2-D screen. The hue is mapped to the horizontal axis like a color wheel unspooled across the screen, the reds are on the left blues and greens in the central part of the screen and rose colors towards the right. The color’s saturation is mapped to the vertical axis with more saturated colors positioned lower on the screen and the lightness of the color controls the size of the radius of the circle, the brighter the color the wider the radius.</image:caption>

<image:title>Color Yourself Inspired™ - The musical notes map a twelve-tone chromatic scale to the hues of a 360o color wheel. The brightness of the color shifts the pitch over 5 octaves, while the saturation controls the duration of the note. By focusing on the language we use to describe visual sensation, Color Yourself Inspired™ (a marketing slogan from the Benjamin Moore website) explores the interplay between perception, psychology, economics, culture, chance and language.</image:title>

<image:title>Souvenirs from the Future - In this hands-on production course, we will create new multi-channel video installation artworks that are in conversation with the rich and diverse histories of this practice. We will engage with the technical, theoretical and aesthetic concepts that inform the production, post-production and exhibition of producing these immersive works. Using both hardware and software methods for synchronizing sources, we will experiment with different vertical and horizontal configurations of multiple monitors and projectors to display student work. Projection mapping and sculptural techniques that investigate methods for breaking the rectangular frame will also be explored. In addition to multiple channels of video, we will also work with multiple channels of audio to create immersive environments. Students will gain hands-on experience working with a quadraphonic sound system and sub-woofer along with other speaker configurations. Through a series of short readings, we will survey diverse perspectives, contexts and topics in this mode of production. We will also screen, critically analyze and discuss a wide array of practices from artists working in this medium. The course will be taught as a hybrid, with some classes via Zoom for discussing texts and learning post-production techniques and others in-person to set up monitors, projectors and speakers to test our work. Documenting the pieces created in class will be part of our working method, ensuring students are able to easily show the outcomes of their work for crits, grant proposals and future exhibitions.</image:title>

<image:title>mcvi-sp24 - In this hands-on production course, we will create new multi-channel video installation artworks that are in conversation with the rich and diverse histories of this practice.
